Brec7 – The main reason they had an old team was not only because they
selected some old guys, some of the guys in their prime were injured and
weren’t able to play.
Mario Lemieux (back issues)
Paul Kariya (abdominal muscle strain)
Ray Bourque (declined invitation)
Patrick Roy (not invited? not interested?).
Then you’ve got the players who pulled out just before the World Cup
tournament started:
Al MacInnis: Attended training camp and played in exhibition games, but had
to pull out late in August due to an infection that reportedly caused him
lose 12 pounds weight in one week.
Ron Francis: Attended training camp and played in exhibition games, but
decided to pull out with his effectivity limited due to an injury (rib?
knee? I’ve read different causes). Francis stated: “If it was the NHL
playoffs, you’d play with it, but you don’t know how effective you’d be.”
Then they had these guys
Ed Jovanovski (20), Lyle Odelein (28) and Sylvain Côté (30) acted as
substitutes. The inclusion of Odelein was labeled as a “mystery” even back
in 1996.
Also Bill Ranford was the 3rd goalie? Should have been Belfour, but again
I think politics had play at this time.
I still think this whole tournament doesn’t get the recognition it should
(mainly cause Canada lost which means the Canadian Media doesn’t talk about
it much, and the American Media rare talks about hockey anyways).
I agree these games were exciting and somewhat magical. Actually Canada’s
run to the final was kind of a fluke if you look at how they managed to
pass Sweden in this game. The US though had a magical team…..and Mike
Richter played crazy in that 3rd game. Still one of the greatest goalie
performances I’ve ever seen in one game.
I still remember Bob Cole of CBC saying “HIT THE GOAL POST!!!!……3 OF
THEM!”
Does anyone have the CBC feed for this game….I would love to hear that
call again….

@phille22 Sadly? Salo was really great in this game.

In a book I read called ‘For the Love of Hockey,’ Keith Tkachuk said
winning the World Cup wouldn’t have been the same had they faced Sweden in
the finals instead of Canada

It’s weird for me to see this footage with the US feed. Still, one of the
greatest games I’ve ever seen. The Canada/US rivalry was so intense at this
time that it’s interesting for me to look back at this game which I feel
gets forgotten… at the time I was obviously off the wall to see Canada
win but it would have hurt less to lose this one than to lose to the USA…
great hockey played by all 3 teams this tourney though! I think Canada
picked a team that was too old, ultimately.

@TBoneMontana Canada was and still is the way better team
TurgeonFan77132 says:
Was that Tommy Salo in goal for Sweden?
ckendall67 says:
NO, did you see the ratings for the Olympic hockey?? You think they’re
going to bring back amateurs now?? LOL! There is another World Cup Of
Hockey scheduled for 2011 I believe….
brady says:
This game was played on American soil and they supported Canada… We did
not do the same and I’ll never forgive us for being so classless to our
neighbors
TBoneMontana says:
Canada where lucky
phille22 says:
sadly, yes
CBBtheLakota says:
you should die. it’s ok to cheer for them, but not when they are playing
us. And certainly not when they’re playing us in hockey.
