Paris St Germain’s disappointing run in the French league continued after a 4-2 defeat against Bastia, who are struggling against the threat of relegation for much of the season.
Bastia moved outside of the relegation zone as a result of this victory, but they were not given much of a chance before the start of the match. This is despite PSG struggling for form in recent weeks. This latest defeat means that the reigning champions have managed just one win in the last five league matches. This poor form coupled with table leaders Olympic Marseille being in impeccable form – they have won the last five league matches without exception – is set to bring about a new champion in the French league.
PSG star Zlatan Ibrahimovic has urged the team to wake up following this poor form. After missing much of the season due to injury, the Swedish striker recently returned and has been trying to get the team back the top of the table. Last season, he was the top scorer in the French league by a distance. This time around, Ibrahimovic trails Lyon striker Lacazette by a significant margin. Ibrahimovic has scored only eight goals while Lacazette has already moved to 19 in the league.
“We played well for the opening 20 minutes, and then something happened that has never happened to me before. After leading 2-0, to lose 4-2… I had never experienced that. We need to wake up. We need to analyse this match, there are a lot of factors to take into account, the details that made the difference in this match. In my opinion, it’s not a mental problem. The atmosphere within the squad is good, that’s not the problem,” said Ibrahimovic. In the absence of Ibrahimovic, strikers like Edinson Cavani have not stepped to the plate.
